With unforgettably vivid characters, transporting settings, and action-packed storytelling, Joan is a thrilling epic, a triumph of historical fiction, as well as a feminist celebration of one remarkable-and remarkably real-woman who left an indelible mark on history. Many are threatened by a woman who leads, and Joan draws wrath and suspicion from all corners, even as her first taste of fame and glory leave her vulnerable to her own powerful ambition. ![]() ![]() This deeply researched novel is a sweeping narrative of her life, from a childhood steeped in both joy and violence to her meteoric rise to fame at the head of the French army, where she navigates both the perils of the battlefield and the equally treacherous politics of the royal court. Chen's hands, the myth and legend of Joan of Arc is transformed into a flesh-and-blood young woman: reckless, steel-willed, and brilliant. From this chaos emerges a teenage girl who will turn the tide of battle and lead the French to victory, an unlikely hero whose name will echo across the centuries. France is mired in a losing war against England. ![]() Saint? A stunning secular reimagining of the epic life of Joan of Arc, in the bold tradition of Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hallġ412. ![]()

There's more going on in Tehanu, the fourth Earthsea book, than I can really get to in this review (as with most Le Guin novels), but I can say it really helped to read Le Guin's 2012 afterword in my edition. I recently moved these two later books in the series - Tehanu and Tales From Earthsea-to the top of my list to prepare for an online discussion of the Earthsea books (info here). I've been a huge fan of Le Guin's science fiction for about 20 years, but I didn't start reading the Earthsea books until a few years ago. ![]() ![]() ![]() Karl undergoes six very bizarre experiences which are the typical Kafka mix of reality and fantastic other worldly imagination, often dark and threatening. Penny found wonderful examples of the ocean plants and critters for Molly to paint, and Molly often painted the same picture several times before we were both satisfied. Molly wrote a first draft, then Penny edited to make it more scientifically accurate. Once we had a rough idea of the concepts and the general narrative, Molly made thumbnail sketches that we reworked until we were fairly sure about how the story would “move.” Then we started writing. ![]() MB and PC: The typical approach to collaborative children’s books is that there is an author and an illustrator and the two do not communicate until the book is finished. ![]() |
